What makes this symphony special is its unusually somber and emotional mood. While many works of the Classical period tend to seem light and elegant, the 40th Symphony is marked by inner turmoil, drama, and melancholy. Above all, the choice of the key of G minor lends it this intense character.

The first movement begins with an immediately recognizable, restless theme that runs throughout the entire piece. In the second movement, the music becomes calmer and more lyrical, yet retains a certain contemplative quality. The minuet in the third movement comes across as unusually powerful and almost austere, while the finale once again unfolds with a strong, stirring energy.

The symphony shows how Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart not only embodied lightness and beauty, but was also capable of musically expressing deep emotions and complex inner states. Today, it is regarded as a masterpiece of classical music and one of the most impressive examples of expressiveness in the Viennese Classical period.
